Celia

Celia's Story and Full Video Testimony

Celia Kenner was born on December 1, 1935, in Lwów, Poland—today Lviv, Ukraine. She was just six years old when her world was shattered by the Nazi invasion. After witnessing growing antisemitism and violence, her family was forced into the Lwów ghetto, where hunger, fear, and loss became part of daily life.

While her mother was taken to a labor camp, Celia was left in the care of relatives. During a brutal raid, she was hidden alone in a barn, surrounded by the sounds of screams and gunfire. By morning, her family was gone. She survived on her own, caring for other children in exchange for scraps of food.

Miraculously reunited with her mother, Celia was later hidden by a Polish family who risked their lives to save her. She witnessed both the cruelty of the time and the courage of those who chose to help.

After the war, her father found them—though she no longer recognized him until he showed her a photograph he had carried throughout the war. The family eventually rebuilt their lives in New York.

Years later, Celia chose to share her story, holding onto one enduring truth: even in the darkest times, there are those who choose humanity.
