Holocaust Survivor testimony

Lucy

Lucy's Story and Full Video Testimony

Lucy Lowell was born in 1921 in Berlin, Germany. One of the oldest Holocaust survivors, she was nearly 104 years old at the time of her testimony. She grew up with an older brother and was just 12 when Hitler came to power, witnessing firsthand how antisemitism isolated her from classmates and culminated in the violence of Kristallnacht.

In 1941, Lucy and her family were arrested and deported to the Łódź Ghetto. The conditions were devastating—overcrowding, starvation, disease. Within a short time, she lost both her mother and her father. Forced into labor alongside her brother, Lucy survived in part by secretly eating raw wheat from the fields where she worked.

In 1944, they were deported to Auschwitz. Upon arrival, Lucy was selected for forced labor, while her brother, deemed too weak, was murdered. She endured brutal conditions, including beatings and extreme overcrowding, but survived in part due to being assigned to a textile factory, where conditions were slightly less severe.

Liberated in 1945, Lucy later immigrated to the United States, where she rebuilt her life and became a successful fashion designer. She married another survivor, Fred, in 1948.

Reflecting on her past, Lucy often warned that the lessons of history remain fragile. Her message is simple and urgent: to respect every human being, and to remain vigilant in the face of hatred.
