Leon

About Course

In 1942, a massacre of the Jews in Leon’s town of Grybów occurred. Leon was
arrested and sent to the Tarnow Ghetto. He was 15 years old. Knowing that a job
could keep him alive, he sought out his cousin who got him one as a horse and buggy
driver for members of the Gestapo; they knew he was Jewish. He was often required to drive these killers and witness the murder of other Jews. Over 3,500 people were
executed while he was there. Some were killed in the synagogue which they later
destroyed. He witnessed his own female cousin’s execution.

In this course you will learn to:

  • Define the Holocaust as the planned and systematic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of European Jews by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945.
  • Define antisemitism as prejudice against or hatred of Jewish people.
  • Recognize the Holocaust as history’s most extreme example of antisemitism.
  • Draw parallels between the past and the present to understand why we must
    study history.
  • Arm themselves with facts so that when they are confronted with Holocaust
    denial, they can speak out.
