Laszlo Holocaust Survivor Testimony

Laszlo Selly and his twin brother were born in 1937 in Budapest, Hungary. Unlike many Hungarian Jews, Laszlo and his family managed to survive in Budapest throughout the war. Still, he recalls how fear became a constant presence in his life.

In 1944, the family was forced into a designated house for Jews, where conditions were harsh and overcrowded. It was there that Laszlo’s father secured a certificate of protection issued by Raoul Wallenberg—a document that would prove vital to their survival.

In 1956, the family left Hungary and settled in the United States, where Laszlo built a new life and became a professional photographer.

In remembrance of his past, he has dedicated part of his work to photographing fellow survivors—capturing not only their faces, but the enduring strength and stories they carry.
